Timing and Sequence

Ten years. I can’t believe how long it has been since I heard my daddy’s voice or felt his hand on my shoulder. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. Ten years since I began writing a novel that shared the depth of his character with the world. It took me a summer to write the first draft. A summer. Three months of getting up early and staying awake hours after my family drifted to sleep and nine summers to learn the craft of writing and the drudgery of editing. After a while, the pages blurred together.

But not today. Not this week. And not this month.

Something happened.

God revealed to me about His sequence and order.

I don’t claim to know much about writing great fiction. But what I do know, will set you at peace with God’s timing on your latest project.

At the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference earlier this year, author Davis Bunn spoke in regards to the 10,000 hour mark. Ten thousand hours laboring over the craft of writing before your work advances to a level worthy of publishing. I’m paraphrasing of course. 10,000 hours. Is that ten summers? I have no idea.

Sometimes we have to wait a day, a year, or even ten years. Simply because what He is going to do in our lives and through our work is all a matter of timing. His timing. His order.

To everything there is a season and a purpose. Everything that happens is when God chooses. Our written words in their season has the power to impact the individuals that God ordained to read our work. A day earlier would be out of rhythm with His great plan for our lives and others. Be patient. Work diligently. Seek after Him.

I like how the Good News Bible states Ecclesiastes 3:9-15. Let’s read it together:

“What do we gain from all our work? I know the heavy burdens that God has laid on us. He has set the right time for everything. He has given us a desire to know the future, but never gives us the satisfaction of fully understanding what He does. So I realized that all we can do is to be happy and do the best we can while we are still alive. All of us should eat and drink and enjoy what we have worked for. It is God’s gift.

I know that everything that God does will last forever. You can’t add something to it or take anything away from it. And one thing that God does is to make us stand in awe of Him. What ever happens or can happen has already happened before. God makes the same thing happen again and again.”

It is God’s gift to us to enjoy what we have worked for. Don’t be discouraged. Don’t give up. Labor. And when your season is here, you will be ready. What God is doing through your work will last forever. And when your book is published, you will stand in awe of Him.

His timing is perfect.

The Interruption

I’m sitting, staring at the List.

The List I made over the weekend to help me stay on track with my writing. All this and more to be completed in one day, along with homeschool and daily life.

  1. Work on WIP
  2. Write 250 words for the new book
  3. Write a blog post
  4. Edit a chapter of WIP
  5. Build Email List
  6. Write a magazine article
  7. And on and on and on…

What shall I write? Why aren’t the words flowing?

And yet, there is a drawing from me. I push it aside and say wait until I’m finished. Wait until I have written all that can pour from me today.

Suddenly, I am overwhelmed with His presence. If I stop to hold a conversation or to spend time with Him, I’ll get behind. I’ll be one day late when tomorrow arrives.

And that is okay with me and with Him.

I am here Lord.

Embracing Your presence, stopping my work efforts, to sit as Your companion and to get to know You. An hour, two hours, who is keeping time? I have no concern for my list. I am seeking You. Loving You. Worshipping You.

Tomorrow will come, along with a new list. But for today I am assured by Your sweet words spoken to me, that if I seek the kingdom of God and Your righteousness, all these things shall be added to me. (Matthew 6:33)

Thank you Lord for the interruption. I love you.

The Good News of Salvation

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me. Because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor, He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

Lord, help me to create stories with these beautiful words in mind. May every piece that I write lead individuals, one by one, to You.

Why am I writing? If for any other reason than to bring glory to Christ…it is selfish ambitions.
And those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God—Galatians 5:19-21

Dear God,

Guard my heart against selfish ambitions. Help me to surrender all my hopes and dreams, laying them at the altar. Lord, I don’t want anything that keeps me distracted from You, or living a life worthy of giving You glory. You alone are my heart’s desire. I love You.

In the precious name of Jesus, I pray.
