Interview with Author Heather C. King

At my first writing conference in 2014, I met author Heather C. King. I was nervous and she was calm, having already released her first book. She welcomed me, hands shaking and about to puke from nerves, and asked if she could pray with me. I’m forever grateful. Get to know Heather, check out her books, and website. Experience the joy of reading Ask Me Anything Lord and Anywhere Faith.

Tell the readers a few things about yourself.

I live in the historic triangle of Virginia, which is near Yorktown, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg, and I love being surrounded by history. I am also an insatiable bookworm and a fan of classic movies, outdoor concerts, chocolate, and hot tea. My husband and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2020 and we have four kids ages five to fourteen, which means I’m in a whirlwind season of busyness and blessing.

Did you always want to write?

I think the truth is yes, I always wanted to write, but it’s scary to admit that. When you’re in high school and college and people ask you what you want to do, you often feel the push to give the practical, down-to-earth answer. So, I said I wanted to be a teacher or editor, or lawyer…(I considered many things!)…and it’s God’s gracious kindness that allowed me to write.

What book or article are you currently working on or just released?

My latest book is title, Anywhere Faith: Overcome Fear, Anxiety, and Excuses and Say Yes to God, published by Discovery House.

What advice do you have for young writers?

Be humble and obedient. God will do whatever He wants to do with our writing without us having to force anything to happen.

Do you write in silence or with background noise/music?

I have four kids and I’ve been actively writing since my oldest was in preschool. Even now, my youngest is just starting kindergarten in the fall. So, I pretty much have noise while I write all the time. I generally write in the kitchen at the table with all the busyness going on around me.

What do you want your readers to take away from your books/writing?

Jesus was such a Master Teacher and Storyteller, who consistently taught the power of story. Even as a nonfiction writer, I hope I can share everyday-life stories that teach us deep truths about the Bible and about the Lord.

Did you dream of being a writer/author when you were young?

I think it would have been my all-time dream to be an author as a kid, but even though I’m an avid reader and always have been, I’ve always, always, always been better at writing essays than creative stories. I don’t think I could have imagined as a kid the world of possibilities for a Christian writer who doesn’t write fiction.

Where do you get your inspiration to write?

From daily life! It might be my kids, or my garden, or waiting in traffic, or something I see on a walk—God teaches me so much when I keep my eyes wide open to what He’s doing around me.
