Sunday Family Dinner

Sunday Family Dinner

Sunday family dinner has always been a favorite of mine, even though the large gatherings don’t happen for my family as often as I’d like. When the kids were growing, I’d get up early before church and prepare dinner ahead of time. Now, it’s just me, Mike, and Red, and we usually head to a local restaurant.

But this Sunday, our family celebrated birthdays. September is full of life around here. Lots of birthdays. I’m still lingering in the aroma of joy and laughter three days later.

All of us packed around the dining room table. Except for my oldest daughter who lives in West Virginia. (She’ll be here next week!)

This Sunday, family dinner comprised of soup and salad and my favorite pasta, Tortellini Alfredo.

A knock at the door…

Years ago, when the kids were still impressionable and money was scarce. We were eating Sunday family dinner and heard a knock on the door. It was a home appraiser. He’d completed an appraisal on our home six months prior. He stood outside the door, a hundred-dollar bill in his hand, and gave it to my husband. Said he’d started attending church and knew he overcharged us.

That morning, we put our tithe check in the offering. I’ll admit, I tried to talk my husband out of it. The kids. Diapers. Food. Emergencies. Another week until payday. That afternoon, God revealed himself as my provider, but not only to me… He revealed himself to my family.

Has a knock at your door changed your perspective? Or lives?

In Before You Were Born, Cooper ate Sunday family dinner with Sophia and her family every week. One Sunday, a knock at the door threatened to change everything about their relationship. Strangers with secrets. Family secrets. One knock, that’s all it took for lives to change.

I much prefer the sweet knock. Not the hard-knock… what about you?
